And it\u2019s particularly true in the complex world of project management.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While, in an ideal world, projects would come together like this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/project.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4k0Ub1rRlbNtBRiy1gUiNTNH-R5N8FuDKJH8oLRvFLmdhq8UqrEEqXVM0lQXrCnD4r_MSovFob9b8YTW3Au-XNyFCqe0r4hUtk2__JKJpSai2uPFyHl7UOtPK35-ioum0taTDha-xnQevfsiWZDh_69mSKOmZcWDC4DrOnt-o_ZY2puiLCUN3SLLBNx.gif\" alt=\"S-curve GIF\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026the reality is that this is pretty much never the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea of a project coming together immediately and experiencing flat, unbroken progress just doesn\u2019t marry up with the way projects, teams and individuals work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, according to what\u2019s called the \u2018S-curve\u2019 model, it\u2019s more likely to look something like this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/project.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/q_G1RIn0ZKYKIKyDdQNGroq-SHvsvWG-Jom1AlY7P-NC-dmvzuBHAORjwjHHqb6uuOEc9KJEWOzv-U5FiaEig0PzeV33wY2zl1ypqmJma2uBOermvSD1DvMMfcB2uESF_w6TO3mvhvCE9bF_X7mXShx_k61NMshw5Lrst6E2I7CaO0UweiJZjmheQPYy.gif\" alt=\"S-curve\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is an S-curve?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An S-curve is a mathematical graph &#8211; we project managers can use it to understand how a project changes and develops over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It tends to look like an S shape &#8211; which is where the name &#8216;S-curve&#8217; comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A mathematical graph?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, yeah &#8211; technically! Like a graph, S-curves have an X axis and a Y axis. In our example we&#8217;ve shown the X axis measuring <strong>time<\/strong> and the Y axis measuring project <strong>progress.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Y axis on an S-curve might also be used to plan and monitor other, various project elements &#8211; things like cash flow, anticipated resource allocation vs. actual resources used, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the important thing to remember is that you&#8217;re planning the way a project <em>should <\/em>play out beforehand, to the way it actually <em>does.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So why does it look like a letter &#8216;S?&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We could get super technical on this answer but, instead, let&#8217;s simplify. The core theory behind the S-curve is that there are different &#8216;phases&#8217; to a project that play out and unfold in different ways: the start-up phase, the middle phase, and the end phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/project.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/OqbQuXcACMNCb8pOB1XZyD6z0sK_hjHkCrnkyGN3c1IR3SQix-ohurkOwYqfPkNdblvOpxWTu9XJbW34pnQ-6PeXifQcf7L4xvm4oVRnmfVxQXpsddLh2SWrKTNm__wXI7PZ7GhU3ao_DzuteMZt1O1aVSC0G8MjWUtOIdXFjVuRLB1jOIZJCyTs_w9s.png\" alt=\"S-curve\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The start-up phase (1) is when a project is first started and, while there&#8217;s a lot of excitement and energy around it, actual progress is slow &#8211; since lots of that energy is tied up in planning and preparation (such as creating S-curve graphs!) rather than doing the project work. But with the tips and tricks in this article, hopefully you can manage your project successfully to avoid common mistakes.<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This is followed by the middle phase (2), which is when the project output really begins and it\u2019s full steam ahead. Everyone\u2019s firing on all cylinders and the bulk of the project deliverables and tasks are completed. This busy period is sometimes called the &#8216;inflection point&#8217; in S-curve methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there&#8217;s the end phase (3), when the project starts to mature and some of the initial enthusiasm starts to wear off.&nbsp; Or, to put it more bluntly &#8211; things are winding down and people are starting to lose interest!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This methodology doesn&#8217;t just apply to a project&#8217;s progress. For example, a similar logic often applies to project costs and cash flow &#8211; the bulk of the outgoings often tend to be bunched up in the middle phase in just the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So how does the S-curve methodology work in practice?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, the S-curve methodology in practice boils down to measuring &#8216;predicted&#8217; vs. &#8216;actual.&#8217; So although we&#8217;ve simplified it by showing you just <em>one <\/em>line, you&#8217;ll actually need two S&#8217;s on one graph. representing what you planned, and what actually happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/project.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ArdMTHPOxhqrEwnEgjmTmrpvjCZhXHwIPnNvnrE-IesuYogdp_v9Qk8kkqpTASMwAj4Gx6Ua8bHBkzQtmvjjF5P2D6C2PX-sGj-DbwbCfbRA3eb2ZC6cJzhW3obdqnazd_aHA0htJvCmR8Zj-DgDLr_R-4opqoJFF9vRTJRtNyS47_W76qHi6EJnQuhMMg.png\" alt=\"S-curve\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And their resemblance to each other will pretty much determine your success. You want them to look <em>really <\/em>alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early stages of planning a project, you create what&#8217;s called a <strong>baseline S-curve, <\/strong>or <strong>baseline schedule<\/strong>. At a simple level, this might forecast how many tasks need to be completed, man hours worked, or gadgets shipped, in how many days &#8211; taking into account the three different phases of project momentum\/enthusiasm!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the project progresses, real time cumulative data does its magical job, creating an <strong>actual S-curve <\/strong>or <strong>production schedule.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objective becomes pretty simple &#8211; keep the two S&#8217;s as close as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a clear idea of what needs to be done, and when, gives project managers a clear mechanism to spot potential delays and project roadblocks, intervene and allocate more resources. And this can be done throughout the whole project lifecycle, since it&#8217;s all forecast in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The benefits of an S-curve graph<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Improved communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using an S-curve in project management can help improve communication between team members.
